11th April. Cockfosters 0 AFC Dunstable 2
In a pretty non-descript match, in the end the pitch came out the winner. On a very dry and rutted playing surface, it was very hard for either team to get the ball down, as it never went where the players wanted it.
After his recent exploits, AFC boss Steve Heath decided to rest 17 year old Brandon Carney, as another 17 year old Taishan Griffith came in. Also hat trick hero from the last meeting between the 2 sides, Enzo Silvestri took his place on the bench, as Chris Francis got a start up front.
With the hosts still thinking they are in a relegation battle, AFC started the stronger as Jermaine Hall had a good chance on 6 minutes, but put his effort wide. As last Saturday's game at Ampthill Town, AFC took the lead with a cross shot and this time it was Griffith who delivered it midway through the 1st half.
With both teams still finding it hard to deliver any quality due to the pitch, the half petered out.
Half time: Cockfosters 0 AFC Dunstable 1
The 2nd half mainly lived up to what went before in the first. It was not becoming a spectacle but AFC tried their hardest to look for a 2nd. Heath decided to introduce the younger Carney on 75 minutes and his energy did start to pay dividends. With 80 minutes on the clock, the visitors finally made it 2-0 from the penalty spot, when Jonathan Cooper was pushed in the back as he headed towards goal. Up stepped Newman Carney to slot home.
As the game was in its dying embers, a great strike by Hall smacked against the crossbar.
News was now coming in from Holmer Green, that the reserves had won 2-0 and now only need 2 points from their remaining 3 games to clinch the SSML Reserve Division North and West title. A double could be on, as they face Great Barford on Wednesday night in the Bedfordshire Intermediate Cup Final at Biggleswade United.
Back to the 1st team performance Heath said " you can only do what you can, on a pitch like that. The lads tried to play football but it was so hard and it was a great leveler to be fair. We showed great character and dug in to get the 3 points. Runners Up is still on, as we move back up to 3rd but we need London Colney to slip up"
