24th September. AFC Dunstable 3 Kent Athletic 0 (SSMFL Challenge Trophy)
It was a pretty much comfortable passage into the next round of the SSMFL Challenge Trophy, as AFC set up an away meeting with Chesham United Reserves on November 5th.
AFC boss Steve Heath decided to give a few players a night off and was pleasantly surprised with the visitors attitude to the game. He said " I was not exactly sure what I expected tonight from Kent's, In my mind for some reason I thought they might have been a bit physical but all credit to them as they played some nice football"
With Moses Olaleye, Fabio Bufano and Jonathan Cooper rested, there were starts for George Biggadike, Jamal Harvey and Tunde Olwambi from Saturday's starting line up.
From the start AFC were on the front foot but found it hard to break down a well organised Kent defence. It took 20 minutes before the break through came, as Jimmy Hartley went on a mazy run and finished with aplomb.
AFC continued to probe as they went looking for their 2nd and with half time approaching Hartley was once again on hand to fire home.
Half Time: AFC Dunstable 2 Kent Athletic 0
The home side got the perfect start to the 2nd half, as a Damien Pickering flick was turned into his own net by a Kent defender on 48 minutes. It was now looking like it would be a cricket score but all credit to the visitors, as they fought on valiantly and did not succumb to all AFC's pressure.
Heath view on the game was " I thought we turned in a solid performance against a decent Division Two side. Chesham Reserves are next, after they beat Leverstock Green on Tuesday night. Our next 3 games are massive for the team, as we travel to Kings Langley on Saturday and then back to back games against my old club Leverstock Green, firstly in the league next Wednesday, then in the FA Vase on the Saturday"
