2nd April - AFC Dunstable 2 Holmer Green 0
On a day results went AFC's way, they had to dig deep against a much improved Holmer Green side to return to the top of the league table. Having smashed them 7-0 back in August, the visitors were a much different proposition this time and it took until the 95th minute to finally kill them off.
One change was made by AFC from Tuesdays win, Terry Griffiths came in for Bill Morgan. The game was also the clash of the leagues two top goalscorers. With BJ Christie on 41 and Holmers Dean Allen on 36, in the end, even though Christie secured his 200th goal for the club, the two defences marshaled them pretty well all afternoon.
The opening exchanges of the game saw both teams cancel each other out, as the commitment from both set of players could not be faulted. Decent chances were few and far between but it took until 29 minutes for the first shot on target. From a free kick, Greens Allen hit a sweet strike but Ricky Perks was a match for the shot and made a good low save.
Half Time: AFC Dunstable 0 Holmer Green 0
The start of the 2nd half was looking like it would follow the trend of the 1st. Then on the hour the home side eventually broke the deadlock. Giving away a foul on the edge of their box, Holmer would rue that decision. Again a Newman Carney free kick picked out Leon Cashman who solidly headed home.
It was looking like AFC settled for a 1-0 win but this gave the visitors confidence to push forward. Again Perks was called into action to tip over an Allen header. With the game entering its final stages, Holmer Green were throwing everything at AFC. From a goalmouth scramble, the OD's punted the ball down field. Christie latched onto the ball and as he entered the penalty box a untimely tackle saw him upended. It was the 93rd minute and it looked like it was going to be the perfect day for Christie. Given the opportunity to secure his landmark, he was given the spot kick. The story did not go to plan as Sam Butcher saved.
There was still time for Holmer to put more pressure on the AFC defence and they forced a very late corner. Up came Butcher for the kick and as the ball bounced and ricocheted near the OD's goal, their defenders put their bodies on the line to keep the ball out. Finally it fell to Cashman to clear the ball upfield. Christie, in his own half, ran onto the clearance and as Butcher made his way back into his goal, he slotted the ball past him and finally got his 200th goal in the 95th minute. Within seconds the final whistle blew and the 3 points were bagged.
